2016-2017 Briar Glen PTC Volunteer Opportunities

 

Below is a list of our events and committees supported by volunteers. We have listed the time of year the event runs, along with descriptions of the event/committee and the type of support needed. Events/committees have one or more chairpersons, and many also need additional volunteers.

Seasonal Events

Welcome Committee

August                                                         

Our Welcome Committee welcomes new families to Briar Glen by inviting them to a welcome orientation and tour just before school starts in the fall.

Kindergarten Tea

August                                                           

This is a time for our new kindergarteners' parents to meet each other, the PTC and have some light refreshments coinciding with the 1st day of school.  Coordinators communicate date and times to new parents and organize the light refreshment.

Welcome Back Ice Cream Social

1st day of school                                                             

An event where Briar Glen Families old and new can get to know each other and make new connections which takes place in the evening on the first day of school.

Sponsored by PTC Board with the help of volunteers

 

 

School Directory

September                                                 

A school telephone/address directory for the sole use of students and their families. The directory is published in September. Coordinator gathers information for the directory with the help of the PTC Board and the District's secretaries.  Copies are then made for distribution.

Spirit Wear

September                                                                                                                                

Clothing and other promotional items with our school name and colors to promote school spirit are available for order in September. The coordinator is able to select vendor and items for sale. They also collect the order forms and deliver the product.

Fall Fundraiser: Boosterthon Fun Run

October

Chairs work with the Boosterthon company as well as school staff and students to coordinate our primary PTC fundraiser. Students participate in a "fun run" and collect pledges based upon number of laps run.

The coordinator organizes volunteers to assist the photographers in gathering students from classrooms.

Briarfest

September or October

Briarfest is a family event full of fun activities.  In the past, it has included games, food, cake walk, haunted trail, bounce house jumpers and obstacle courses, and lots of fun!

Book Fair

October and March 

Fall and Spring time bring the much anticipated Book Fairs sponsored by Scholastic Books! The sales run during school hours as well as an evening. Proceeds of this sale go directly to the LMC for new books.  Volunteer support is needed to design layout in the library, send communication to teachers, parents, and students, as well as support the days of the fair.

Movie Night

3 Movies during the school year, beginning in October                                                                                                       

A Friday evening for Briar Glen students (only) to go to the gym and watch a movie with friends, typically held in October, December and March.  Coordinators are in charge of movie selection, registration, and concession sales.  Volunteers needed each movie night to help with concessions and providing a parent presence.

Walk To School Day

This event takes place in the fall on National Walk to School Day where students are encouraged to walk to school with stops setup and supervised by PTC volunteers to form a walking school bus.  Water and a light snack are served to the students before they enter school.

Vision, Hearing & Dental Screenings

November and February                    

Parent volunteers help organize the students for district-run vision, hearing and dental screenings.

Holidays Around the World

December                                                                                           

A “getting ready for the holidays” event featuring crafts that represent different holiday celebrations around the world.  This event also hosts a special shopping event for Briar Glen children. The children’s shopping event offers gift items from $0.50 to $10.00, and free gift-wrapping.

Pasta and Bingo Family Fun Night

January

The Pasta/Bingo Family Night has become a favorite at Briar Glen in the last two years!  Come out for a nice pasta meal and some good old fashion fun -- BINGO!!

Cheerleading

January-March                                       

During basketball season, 1st and 2nd graders practice and cheer at District 89 basketball games.  Fifth graders are also involved in assisting with the coaching and leading the cheers during practices and games.  Chairs coordinate schedules, attend practices and games, as well as end of the season party.

Great America Ticket Program

February                                                

Students have the opportunity to earn a free ticket to Six Flags theme park by completing a designated number of reading minutes in a specified time frame.  Coordinator handles paperwork.

Plant Sale

April                                                                                                                                          

Test your green thumb, add some beautiful color to your home, and help your school.  Coordinators choose the plant vendor with the assistance of the Board, collect orders and schedule the delivery.

Staff Appreciation

April                                                                                                                                          

A week at the beginning of May to express student and parent appreciation of the Briar Glen Staff. Small tokens of appreciation are given to show the staff how much we appreciate all they do for our kids. Coordinator plan all activities and luncheon feast with the help of donated items.

Bulldog 3K Run/Walk

May                                                 

In the Spring, students, families, and friends gather to participate in a neighborhood-based 3K run/walk with a raffle at its conclusion. All speeds welcome.

Field Day

May                                                         

An afternoon of outdoor track and field type games for grades K-5 near the end of the school year.

"Fifth Grade Fling" End-of-year Celebration

May                                                     

A celebration in the spring to acknowledge our students who will be moving on to Glen Crest Middle School next year.

Used School Supplies

May/June                                                                                                       

At the end of the school year, old school supplies are collected and donated to charities.

Benefit Days Coordinator

On-going during the School Year                                                                                     

Committee coordinates fundraisers held at local businesses (mostly restaurants) with a small percentage of sales going to the PTC.

Box Tops for Education / Campbell’s Soup Labels

On-going during the School Year           

Coordinator collects and submits product labels from General Mills product box tops and Campbell's soup labels, which earn cash or points that can be used to purchase supplies for the school.

Bulldog Bulletin Newsletter

Monthly                                                    

Coordinator publishes/edits our school newsletter filled with information to keep you updated on school and PTC activities. The Bulldog Bulletin is sent via email once a month.

Community Outreach

On-going during the school year              

This committee works with the school Social Worker to make sure that our families who are in need are able to access the resources available through the Briar Glen community.

Cultural Programs

On-going during the school year (generally 4 -5 events)       

The cultural committee chooses, books and attends all-school assemblies that are held 4-5 times a year.

Gift Card Program

Ongoing during the school year      

Great Lakes Scrip sells the gift cards and the PTC benefits by receiving a small percentage of sales from each gift card. Coordinators are needed to collect forms throughout the year and process the orders.

Memory Book

Ongoing during the school year              

Briar Glen’s very own “yearbook” filled with school and candid photos taken at activities throughout the year. Coordinator is in charge of taking and collecting these photos throughout the school year, helping the yearbooks and delivering the books to the students.

Pre-Approved Food List

Ongoing during the school year             

For the safety of our children, one representative will work with the District nurse to maintain the pre-approved food list that is used for classroom parties.

School Store

On-going during the School Year (generally held  twice per month)

Kids have the opportunity to purchase school related items such as cool pens, pencils, and other novelty items at the School Store during lunch time.  School Store is generally held once per month, and items range from $0.25 - $5.00.  Chairperson selects, purchases and oversees inventory, and several volunteers are needed at each "store" day.

Scouts

Ongoing during the school year                                                            

The PTC is open to sponsoring the Girl Scout and Boy Scout programs, providing them with opportunities for service as well as a place to meet. The PTC is the chartering organization for our Cub Scout Pack.

This volunteer is in charge of maintaining the PTC website at www.bgptc.org along with sending out email blast to keep our families informed.
